Drew McIntyre: I’ve Been Gone For 17 Years. I’ve Missed A Lot And I Feel Kind Of Guilty About It, I Want To Give My Family The World Title

Ahead of his match with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40, Drew McIntyre was interviewed on SHAK Wrestling’s YouTube channel.

Drew McIntyre talking about the current creative direction of the WWE roster:

“It’s good to try new things, get a fresh pair of eyes on it, and just say, alright, let’s let the performance go for it. Let’s maybe try things that have never been tried. Let’s maybe involve characters in multiple stories at the same time rather than just this is the story, you’re story B, and the rest is kind of random matches across the card. Everything has meaning. Everyone has meaning. We can cross these characters. It doesn’t matter if they’re both bad. It doesn’t matter if they’re both good. Like right now it’s just, you know, what’s your point? Where are you coming from? Where’s this character coming from? Oh, this is interesting. As long as it’s interesting television and compelling television and touches you emotionally, that’s all that matters and should really matter. It’s awesome to see how many people have been able to step up. Every time someone’s music hits, the fans know, oh, there’s such and such. They’re about this. They mean something, and it hasn’t been that way probably since late ’99, early 2000 where everybody across the board meant something.”

On family sacrifices:

“There was one interview I did where I mentioned going back home that I was talking to Seth, I think, a few months ago on TV and just seeing things like my dad getting older and stuff and how many things that I’ve missed over the years. It used to be my mindset was my sacrifices. I’m the one on the road all the time. I’m the one taking all the bumps and running myself into the ground and very appreciative and grateful. This was always the dream. This is what I was willing to do and I’m very fortunate to live the life I live because of my job. I got to the point where I realized this is their sacrifice. They gave up their son, their nephew, their brother, and their uncle has missed so many important events because he’s chasing his dream and they encouraged me to chase my dream and I really started wising up to that and felt really guilty. I was back for a wedding. My buddy Blair was getting married. I always see my close family, close friends whenever I can, but I’d seen people who were friends that I had not seen in 20 years. I’ve been gone legitimately for 17 years. It hit me that I’ve missed a lot and I feel kind of guilty about it. I’m very proud of everything I’ve done. I wouldn’t take it back, but at the same time, you know, I want to give my family that title. I want to give my dad that title. I want to put it in his hands and say, ‘Here it is. This was what it was all about since I was five years old.’”
