Gable Steveson made his pro wrestling debut last Sunday at NXT: The Great American Bash. During the match with Baron Corbin, fans turned on Steveson and chanted Kurt Angle’s name.
On his latest podcast, Dutch Mantel talked about the fans chanting, “You’re no Angle” at Steveson during his match:
“This is all good for him because if the people are responding to him, he’s touched a nerve somewhere. Even mentioning his name with Kurt Angle, that is great because WWE will go out and say, ‘Kurt, come back and help this guy for a month, two months. Just show up at TV and just do some stuff with him and then we’ll put you on the Pay-per-views just to help get him over.’”
Mantel continued, “Kurt Angle could get him over just by being in his corner. The kid would get over just being around Kurt Angle. Corbin, by the same token, I think most of those NXT fans are super smart fans anyway and they know the trouble he’s gone through and now they are kind of respecting him for that.”
It’s unclear what’s next for Steveson. He wasn’t mentioned on NXT TV this week and the feeling is that there’s a lot of work he needs to put in before he gets better in the pro wrestling ring.
