On last week’s episode of WWE SmackDown, the company booked a segment with Edge and Sheamus to set up their match for this week’s show as well as a 25-year celebration segment for the WWE Hall of Famer.
They talked and even showed footage of Edge’s bike wreck with Sheamus on the trails, which led to Edge thinking he might be able to wrestle again after taking the fall, which led to him being medically cleared again to compete in 2020.
Edge stated last year that he wanted to end his career this year at a show in Toronto, which just so happens to be Friday’s SmackDown.
Edge seemingly walked those comments back somewhat at the WWE Elimination Chamber post-show press conference. Edge was asked about his past comments but didn’t seem sure that would be when he walked away and noted he was not sure what he was eating for breakfast tomorrow. He is only sure about his retirement match happening in Canada.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted Edge’s trainer has said that this is probably Edge’s last match before he started to speculate that Edge may keep his retirement a secret and not want to bill it up as a retirement match.
Meltzer: “So there’s a big thing here. You know, a year ago, Edge had said that he would retire at the summer show in Toronto, and Ron Hutchinson, who is Edge’s trainer and has maybe known Edge for 30 years. Yeah. 30 years-ish, I would say. He said that this is Edge’s last match.”
Bryan Alvarez: “Well, he certainly didn’t build it up like it was the end.”
Meltzer: “They certainly did not. No. Makes sense. No, but it was interesting when you said, like, it’s probably it’s most likely Edge’s last match. Wow. This is interesting because, and I mean I didn’t, you know, like watching the tv, I didn’t think it at all. No, but I remember a year ago when Edge said, you know, because I think that the idea was that Edge thought that maybe Summer was going to be in Toronto, and he was hoping for that. And then that would be where he would retire. Yeah. Because he wants to retire in Toronto. And this is the year he was talking about retiring for real. You know, the second retirement, and this is the last Toronto Show for a while. There’ll be another one, but I don’t know if they’re not billing it as such if this is retirement. But his trainer said that it’s probably his last match.”
Alvarez: “Well, honestly, if you look at the story they told where, you know, Seamus is here because of Edge, and Edge is here because of Sheamus. This would be a great match to go out with if you can do it in front of your hometown, get a main event, get some time, and have a great match; I guess we’ll see.”
Meltzer: “So maybe it could be one of those things where, you know, of course, they’re going to do what Edge wants to do, where Edge doesn’t want anyone to know. But there, we just talked about it.”
Alvarez: “We’ll know ahead of time. It’s your fault, not mine.”
Meltzer: “It’s, I guess it’s my fault. Okay.”
