Gunther may finally get his wish for a match with Brock Lesnar this year, a bout that fans have also been waiting to see.
As exclusively reported by WrestlingNews.co in December, WWE had been internally planning for the match to happen at WrestleMania 39, but it was nixed. Instead, Lesnar worked a match with Omos, an idea from Vince McMahon, while Gunther defended the Intercontinental Title against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in a triple threat match.
Gunther has talked in past interviews about wanting the match because he feels that a match with Lesnar would present the biggest possible challenge for him. He has also spoken highly of Lesnar’s mind for business.
WWE teased a showdown between the two stars in the 30-Man Royal Rumble match.
The WRKD Wrestling Twitter account reported today that the idea of Gunther squaring off with Lesnar has been floated backstage, with them working sometime this summer.
WWE could do the match at Money in the Bank this July from The O2 Arena in London, England, or SummerSlam in August from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
For now, Lesnar is expected to wrestle Cody Rhodes at Backlash next month in Puerto Rico.
