JBL returns with the new Baron Corbin on WWE Monday Night Raw

JBL made his return tonight on WWE Monday Night Raw to make an announcement. Before the announcement, he said, “I apologize…for doing this in Oklahoma.” Then he went into a classic JBL heel promo trashing the fans. JBL also said that “deadbeat” dad Rey Mysterio is a horrible person.

JBL then introduced Baron Corbin, who came out to similar music that he had when he was Happy Corbin and he’s wearing a different outfit. They also gave Corbin some pyro.

JBL then cut a promo about Dolph Ziggler stealing money for the company because he wouldn’t have made the cut if he was in the Attitude Era. JBL then said that Corbin could have been a champion in any generation and today is the emergence of the “Modern Day Wrestling God.” The segment led to a match between Corbin and Ziggler. On commentary, JBL put over Corbin as the greatest ever ahead of names like Bruno Sammartino. Corbin won the match with the End of Days. This is an attempt to get fans to take Corbin seriously.

The character change is something he’s been working on with Triple H. Corbin recently said the following during an interview with The Johnny Dare Morning Show:

“Triple H taking over, he’s bringing the kind of like this fresh vibe, and you know, Triple H, he thrived in the attitude era. Like, he is pretty much the definition with DX of the attitude Era. I think he’s bringing some of that attitude and pushing the envelope, and bringing the aggressiveness back to WWE. I think it’s an awesome thing because he wants to keep the entertainment as well. I’m not just a big bad guy that’s tough and beats everybody up. Like, ‘How can we do it and be entertaining and funny and witty?’ It’s pretty awesome to have him putting his touch on a lot of things and really. He’s bringing a lot of fresh aspects to it, and I think it’s getting people excited. It’s really helping it thrive again and being back in front of people.

He’s a guy who, when I came into NXT, he was a guy who really grabbed onto me and helped develop me and create who I was. My first entrance, he brought that whole motorcycle vibe, that drudgy rock music where I walked in, and I had spotlights over my head. That was all his vision and it’s cool to have him back because he has now kind of taken what I’ve been doing and going, ‘How do we put more edge back on you? How do we make you a little more badass again?’ And that feels good to have that.”
