There was a time when AEW World Heavyweight Champion MJF played up the fact that his AEW contract was going to expire in early 2024, but he has cut back on mentioning it.
He played up the idea that he could jump ship from AEW to WWE, depending on which company brought him the bigger bag of money. There could be a reason as to why he stopped mentioning it.
As previously reported, several WWE sources believe MJF has quietly re-signed with AEW, with one higher-up WWE source stating that there have been “zero talks” between the two sides.
Contract status
While appearing on the SI Media Podcast, MJF was asked about his contract status.
“I’ve never lied. January 1, 2024. When stuff like that gets leaked out, it makes me laugh because I remember something got leaked out about Cody [Rhodes] having secretly re-signed, and then he showed up. Somebody got leaked out about CM Punk and Tony Khan….I think fans leak out things that they want to be true. I love AEW. I want to stay in AEW. After this pay-per-view [Worlds End], it’s time to assess the situation from a professional setting.”
When asked to clarify whether he has put pen to paper yet, “Not yet,” MJF said.
CM Punk
MJF was also asked about CM Punk’s departure from AEW and return to WWE.
“I’ll just say, it’s the greatest feud of the modern era, me vs. CM Punk and that happened on AEW television.”
When asked if he was sad that things didn’t work out between Punk and AEW, he said,
“No, I was happy for him because listen, if he’s happy, I’m happy. I think he’s a hell of a talent. And at the end of the day, it’s a business. And for some reason with wrestling, it’s looked at differently than any other sport. I see guys get traded to different teams all the time. That’s just life. So he did what he felt was best for him and the company did what they felt was best for the company. So I just hope he’s happy. I wish him the best of luck.”
