Original plans for Sami Zayn vs. Roman Reigns at WWE Elimination Chamber

WWE is a day away from the most highly anticipated bouts in recent memory when Sami Zayn challenges Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at Saturday’s Elimination Chamber PLE in Montreal. This match comes after months of build.

Last week on SmackDown, as WWE continues to tease tension within The Bloodline, Reigns told The Usos to watch Elimination Chamber from home so they could see what he saw on SmackDown, which was a backstage segment where Jey Uso gave Zayn a fist bump. This may be a way to explain why The Usos won’t appear at the PLE as they can’t get into Canada. However, a recent report stated they were cleared to travel to the country despite Jimmy’s DUI history, something Canada takes seriously.

Dave Meltzer confirmed in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the original plan was for Zayn to lose at Elimination Chamber after Jey Uso turned on him to set up Zayn and Kevin Owens to challenge The Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania Goes Hollywood.

That was speculated to be the plan for months, and indeed, it was what Triple H had in mind, although Zayn has gotten super over with the fans in recent months.

Meltzer wrote, “The original plan was for Zayn to lose, Jey Uso to turn on him, and the Usos vs. Zayn & Owens at WrestleMania back many months. But a lot has changed since that time.”

As previously reported, higher-ups in WWE don’t view Zayn as a WrestleMania headliner, although some in the company have pushed for it.

Reigns is also slated to defend his title against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania Goes Hollywood this April in LA.
