More than one AEW star asked to be released after being contacted by WWE

When Malakai Black asked to be let out of his AEW contract, it came at an interesting time as AEW sent an e-mail to WWE co-CEOs Nick Khan and Stephanie McMahon warning them ‘not to tamper’ with their talent.

This was after an AEW wrestler reported to the company that a WWE representative contacted them regarding a possible return. Black did get his release from the promotion.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Black was one of the people in AEW that WWE reached out to about returning after Triple H took over creative from Vince McMahon several months ago.

Meltzer wrote, “Black was not the only person to ask for his release at the time. Others did not ask for their release and were happy with AEW and contacted management.”

Triple H has brought back several stars, including Johnny Gargano, Karrion Kross, Dexter Lumis, Dakota Kai, Hit Row, and Braun Strowman.
