WWE is expected to make The Rock vs. Roman Reigns for WrestleMania 40 later this week at the WrestleMania Kickoff event in Las Vegas, Nevada, after the first showdown between the two stars last week on SmackDown.
Push
This match was planned in secret last month when Dwayne Johnson was appointed to the TKO Board of Directors. He was also given the rights to the trademarked “The Rock” name in addition to $30 million dollars in stock.
Part of The Rock’s deal to join the Board of Directors was to get the match with Reigns, something he and the company wanted to do for years. He also pushed strongly for the match as a way to save the WrestleMania card due to plans being changed with CM Punk and Brock Lesnar.
Going forward
This is despite Cody Rhodes earning the title shot against Reigns when he won the Men’s Royal Rumble Match with the belief that he will now challenge Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Title.
Pwinsider reports, “The Rock is 100% performing in the ring at Wrestlemania 40” as it’s happening, and he’s contractually locked in. There had been a small amount of speculation that The Rock might pull out of doing the match because of the negative feedback from fans, but that’s not the case.
They were told there is “no scenario” where Rock is not wrestling Reigns at Wrestlemania 40 unless something unforeseen happens, like an injury.
