Seth Rollins’ World Heavyweight Championship Will Not Follow the Lineage of the Previous World Heavyweight Title

For those of you wondering, it looks like the World Heavyweight Championship is held by Seth Rollins will not have a lineage tied to the previous World Heavyweight Title that was introduced on WWE TV in 2002.

Per WWE’s website, Rollins is the first World Heavyweight Champion and the previous World Title is retired.

The previous version of the title first appeared on WWE TV when it was awarded to Triple H in 2002. That belt was a replica of the big gold belt that was featured on NWA/WCW TV in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. Names like Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Randy Orton, Golberg, Chris Benoit, Rey Mysterio, Batista and Kurt Angle were among those who held the World Heavyweight Title.

The current title was designed with aspects of the Winged Eagle and the WWWF Championship as a tribute to the design from the company’s golden era and Bruno Sammartino’s reign.
