WWE fans may get the long-hoped-for match between CM Punk and Steve Austin following Punk’s return to the company.
The tease
The closest fans got to see the feud was to promote the WWE 13 video game when they did a sitdown promo segment with Jim Ross and exchanged words in character, as seen below.
Ausitn came out of retirement at WrestleMania 38 for a match with Kevin Owens, his first since WrestleMania 19 against The Rock in 2003. WWE wanted him to wrestle at WrestleMania 39, but due to filming commitments for his A&E show at the time, he passed on the offer.
The idea
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that “there were several in the company pushing for the possibility of CM Punk to take on Stone Cold Steve Austin. So much so that we’re told that Punk had even had discussions about the possibility.”
Many people in WWE are hopeful and optimistic that the match could finally be put together, as many ideas have floated between Punk and the company. The ideal situation would be to see Punk meet with Austin to go over ideas.
However, the two sides reportedly need to get through a lot before a match can happen. People close to Austin said they’ve not heard him mention any personal issues with Punk that they would need to get over. It’s unclear what they need to work through.
