Top name being considered for Roman Reigns’ WWE Royal Rumble opponent

Roman Reigns will be back on WWE television earlier than originally expected, ahead of his WWE Undisputed WWE Universal Title defense at the Royal Rumble.

Things change

The initial belief was he would remain off television for the rest of the year and be back on television for the start of the build to the Royal Rumble on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from Tampa, FL, at Tropicana Field after the last match. Last month, He beat LA Knight to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Title in Saudi Arabia.

As previously reported, WWE was not considering a rematch between Knight and Reigns at the Royal Rumble.

The future

WWE announced Reigns for SmackDown shows on December 15 in Green Bay, WI, January 5 in Vancouver, BC, and January 19 in Atlanta, GA.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that as of earlier in the week, an opponent wasn’t locked in. However, a top name being considered is Randy Orton. Meltzer speculated that Kevin Owens and Knight could be other names considered.

Meltzer wrote, “A few names have been considered, Orton being one of them. Orton, Owens and Knight would on paper seem like the top names but none are a lock and Knight was supposed to go in another direction as of last week.”
