WWE had talks with Steve Austin to do another match at last year’s SummerSlam

Although it was originally reported that WWE was looking at the possibility of doing Steve Austin vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 this year, the company also explored the idea of having Austin wrestle Brock Lesnar.

Austin was reportedly offered an “enormous” amount of money to do the match with Roman Reigns. This all comes after Austin came out of retirement last year for a WrestleMania 38 match with Kevin Owens.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Reigns vs. Austin was a match pitched as recently as a few weeks ago. Meltzer was told the main idea for Austin at Mania was to do a match with Lesnar with the hope of having two significant main events of, Austin vs. Lesnar and Reigns vs. The Rock, for the two-night show.

The Rock has indicated that he won’t have enough time to get into ring shape for the match, and talks of doing Austin vs. Lesnar have fallen through.

Meltzer wrote, “WWE had also talked of getting Austin for another match at SummerSlam last year, and the attempt for this year for Mania was to get him with Lesnar, with the idea of it being a first-time ever dream match.”

Austin is still rumored to be competing at WrestleMania in April.
