It looks like fans will have to wait even longer to see a match between Gunther and Brock Lesnar in WWE.
As exclusively reported by WrestlingNews.co in December, there were internal plans for Gunther vs. Lesnar to happen at WrestleMania 39. However, it was nixed after plans for Lesnar changed a few times, with him ultimately wrestling Omos, an idea from Vince McMahon. For Gunther, he defended the Intercontinental Title against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in a triple threat match.
In the past, Gunther has expressed interest in the match because he feels that a match with Lesnar would present the biggest possible challenge for him. He has also spoken highly of Lesnar’s mind for business. This past January, WWE teased a showdown between the two stars in the 30-Man Royal Rumble match.
It was reported earlier this week that the idea of Gunther squaring off with Lesnar had been floated backstage, with them working sometime this summer. An event wasn’t listed, but the two PLEs this summer would be at Money in the Bank this July from The O2 Arena in London, England, or SummerSlam in August from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that there are no plans for the match to happen. RingSide News first reported that WWE has a different opponent for Lesnar this summer.
Meltzer wrote, “Right now there are no plans for Lesnar vs. Gunther at SummerSlam or Lesnar vs. Gunther any time soon. Of course that can change because it is a viable match. But if Lesnar is scheduled on SummerSlam there is already a direction that isn’t Gunther.”
