WWE hoping to have The Rock return for a match against Roman Reigns at a WrestleMania event has been well-documented over the last few years. Many feel WrestleMania 39 next year in Los Angeles is a real possibility. The company would get a ton of publicity by having the former WWE Champion back for one more match, which would likely be his retirement bout.
Triple H is looking to make a statement with his first Royal Rumble event coming up on January 28. The event has broken the record for the largest gate for a Royal Rumble event in company history.
There has been speculation about The Rock making an appearance at the Royal Rumble with the idea that it would kick off the storyline that would lead to a match with Reigns at WrestleMania 39.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the idea had been discussed within WWE.
Meltzer wrote: “The idea was being talked about behind-the-scenes, but as best we can tell, while rumors certainly exist within the company, as far as those who would be in a position to know, there is no real answer. If Johnson wants to do it and can be sold on the idea, it would be the most perfect scenario for the company.”
The report stated the only thing they were told was that the close-to-finalized plans for the WrestleMania main event need to be locked in by mid-January, and if The Rock wants to do the match, then he needs to let the company know by that date.
The report added: “Originally, the belief was that if his schedule allowed for it, Johnson would do likely his last match at Mania with Reigns, who is a family member. This has been talked about for years, and Johnson wanted it in Los Angeles if he could do it.”
WWE previously talked about doing Rock vs. Reigns at WrestleMania 38 this year in Dallas, Texas, but Rock was more interested in doing the match in Los Angeles, so they went with Brock Lesnar against Reigns.
As of this writing, there’s nothing official to the idea of The Rock being a surprise entrant in the Men’s Royal Rumble match as the No. 30 entrant and winning the match right now past it being a rumor.
The Rock hasn’t wrestled a full match since dropping the WWE Championship to John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 29 in 2013.
