WWE Officials Convinced They Were Right to Not Have Cody Rhodes Win at WrestleMania 39

Cody Rhodes came up short of beating Roman Reigns at WWE WrestleMania 39 when challenging for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title.

Rhodes had his chance after returning from injury in the number 30 spot in the men’s Royal Rumble match, winning it and earning a shot at Reigns.

It was a shocking finish at the time as many expected him to dethrone “The Tribal Chief.” Heading into the bout, Reigns was reportedly slated to take time off, which didn’t happen.

In reality, it was known for a while among those in the know that Rhodes wouldn’t win despite most fans thinking it was the logical decision considering Reigns’ lengthy title reign.

Since then, Reigns has continued his Bloodline storyline with The Usos, while Rhodes recently finished up a three-PLE feud with Lesnar with “The American Nightmare” going over with a 2-1 record against “The Beast Incarnate.”

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that “Those in WWE are strong on the idea that growth is proof that the decision not to put the title on Rhodes at that time was the right one, and in theory, someday they will.”
