WWE SmackDown Segment Had to Be Nixed After Rey Mysterio Suffered a Legitimate Injury

If you watched Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown, then it was apparent something was wrong with Rey Mysterio and why WWE had to call off his United States Title Invitational finals match with Santos Escobar. This bout ended earlier than expected.

Santos did an outside dive in the bout, and Mysterio landed on his back wrong. The spot happened during the commercial break. A replay of the spot was shown. When WWE returned from break, WWE medical checked on the Hall of Famer. The referee called for the bell, with Escobar being declared the winner.

Post-match, Mysterio managed to get back up on his feet to congratulate Escobar on the win.

Because of the win, Escobar is the #1 contender, with him earning a title match with US Champion Austin Theory. They will clash on the August 11 edition of SmackDown at the Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that Escobar was supposed to win the match cleanly. An audible was called for the bout to end. The report added there was a backstage segment follow-up that was planned that had to be nixed.
