WWE SmackDown Star Appears to Be Getting His Name Changed

It’s looking more likely that WWE will be going through with changing the name of one star on SmackDown.

The star

Butch, aka Pete Dunne, has been mostly used as a tag team star since making his main roster debut last year after a successful run in NXT UK and NXT. He was paired alongside Ridge Holland and Sheamus.

The Brawling Brutus put over other teams or be at ringside for Sheamus’ singles matches. Tyler Bate is now on the main roster after making his main roster debut two weeks ago on SmackDown, where he teamed with Butch against Pretty Deadly (Elton Prince & Kit Wilson). They’ll run it back tonight on SmackDown.

Last week, Butch teased changing his name and said that the Brawling Brutes were a thing of the past.

Change in the air

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that a change back to Pete Dunne has long been discussed, and one source told Corey Brennan, “It’s exactly what it looks like.”

The report added they “were told at the time that Butch’s name was changed from Dunne, it got some of the heaviest pushback in recent WWE memory”.

At least one person they spoke with said of it: “It wasn’t even that it was a bad name. The name was okay. It was fine. But there was already a Butch. An actual wrestler named Butch already in our Hall of Fame.”
