Triple H is a student of the pro wrestling business and a big fan of wrestling history. Following a report last week about WWE talking about bringing back the King of the Ring tournament as a standalone event, there was speculation about how the company would handle the event.
Would WWE use the original format of a single-night tournament? Or do what they’ve done in recent years, where some of the matches (semi-finals and finals) would take place at the actual event while the opening round matches take place on television.
WrestleVotes told GiveMeSport that there is a good chance event is coming back and the tournament will play out in a single night.
“There’s a very good chance that King of the Ring is back, and likely back in the format that had happened in the late 80s. The idea is that every single match will happen that night.”
The Twitter account added, “In the 90s, a lot of the matches happened on Superstars and Raw, with the semi finals and finals on pay-per-view. If it’s going to come back on pay-per-view, which I would say is probably going to happen, you’re going to have a full-on one-night tournament.”
The original report also stated that this standalone King of the Ring premium live event would also include the Queen of the Ring tournament.
Don Muraco won the inaugural 1985 tournament at a house show. The first-ever King of the Ring PPV event aired in 1993 and was won by Bret Hart. Due to declining buy rates, Vince McMahon canceled the yearly pay-per-view event after the 2002 edition.
