On the latest episode of What Do You Wanna Talk About?, WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella shared the hilarious and wild origin story of her twin sister’s famous catchphrase and alter-ego, “Brie Mode.” In a conversation with Cody Rhodes, Nikki explained that “Brie Mode” is a very real phenomenon that she has been dealing with since high school, long before it became a popular t-shirt in WWE.
The topic came up as Rhodes was asking about the dynamic between the twin sisters, who are famously different in many ways despite being identical. Nikki revealed that she was the one who actually coined the term “Brie Mode” to describe her sister’s drunken antics.
The Birth of Brie Mode
“So I did ‘Brie Mode.’ I came up with that in high school,” Nikki revealed. “Keg killer. Call her that too. Yep, she was both.”
She then broke down the specific conditions under which “Brie Mode” is activated and what it entails. “So she hits a certain point of intoxication,” she explained. “She’ll have… it’s just all of a sudden, number four drink or whatever, and then she looks at you, and you’re like, ‘We’re about to be in Brie mode.'”
Fearless, Fun, and Sometimes Violent
Nikki described the experience of being around “Brie Mode” as unpredictable, ranging from hilarious fun to something that required her to intervene to prevent a public incident. “Majority of the time it’s really fun and playful. I mean, there’s no fear in her, fearless, like, wants people, dancing now,” she said. “Then sometimes it would turn into wrestling, biting, and I’d have to be like, ‘You can’t fight random people who are waiting for a drink.’ That’s when it would like… so then Brie Mode, I didn’t know what I’d get.”
She continued, “But majority of the time it was hilarious and funny. It was like having free entertainment. But I would just have to make sure to stay sober and responsible… we’d be, it doesn’t matter where we would be, and I would just be like, ‘Oh my gosh, here it goes. We’re about to get a performance for hours.’ And then I’d put her to bed.” Nikki also humorously noted that the “Brie Mode” gene seems to run in their family, tracing it back to her mother and several cousins.
“Brie Mode” became a popular catchphrase and t-shirt for Brie Bella during her WWE career, particularly during the height of the Divas Era and the “Yes!” Movement with her husband, Bryan Danielson.
