On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer addressed the recent fan speculation about Adam Copeland (formerly Edge) returning to WWE for John Cena’s final match. The rumors gained traction on social media after Copeland announced he was “going home” a couple of weeks ago, and were amplified when fans at the Crown Jewel post-show press conference began chanting for “Edge” while Paul “Triple H” Levesque was speaking.
Meltzer definitively shut down the possibility of a Copeland return for Cena’s farewell. “When Adam Copeland, a couple weeks ago, did the thing where he said he was going home, all of a sudden, people were like, ‘He’s going to be John Cena’s last opponent,’ which, of course, that’s not the case. Can’t happen. He’s under contract,” Meltzer stated.
He explained that Copeland’s on-screen departure from AEW is simply a storyline to write him off television while he is away filming a movie or TV show. “It was an angle to come back for FTR,” Meltzer said, referencing Copeland’s tag team partners. “He’s doing a movie and TV or whatever he’s doing that sets that, makes him gone for a little while.”
During the Crown Jewel post-show press conference, which was open to fans in the arena, the live crowd’s chants were a notable part of the event. “When Levesque was out there at the end of the show, they did it from the arena. So there was a lot of people still there, and they were very interesting, because they were chanting for really loud, for Edge. They were singing Edge’s song, and Levesque was just trying to ignore it and keep talking,” Meltzer recounted. He added that the crowd also chanted for Chris Jericho and MJF, with Levesque “no-selling” all of them.
While a final match between the two longtime rivals would be a fitting end to Cena’s career, Copeland’s current contractual obligation to AEW makes the dream match an impossibility. The full discussion is available on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio.
