AEW Star Pulls Out Of Indy Event Amid WWE Reports

An AEW star has pulled out of a scheduled booking at a time when his contract with AEW is close to expiring, and with interest from WWE.

As previously reported by several media outlets, Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix are said to have interest from WWE when their deals expire. Bryan Alvarez of F4Wonline first reported that AEW internally believes Lucha Bros will leave the company for WWE once they are free and clear of their AEW deals.

This was later confirmed by WrestlePurists and Fightful Select, with additional notes stating Penta’s deal is up first, and Fenix’s will be up around September. Sean Ross Sapp reported this week that Lucha Bros. wants to be a package deal and doesn’t want to go to NXT. It was added that the two sides have not yet reached a deal, as they have to wait until their AEW deals are up.

Fenix, who last competed on AEW television on the August 20th edition of Collision, has withdrawn from a booking with New Era Wrestling for a show on September 2nd in El Paso, Texas.

Typically, when WWE is about to sign someone, they will sometimes pull them from future independent bookings. It’s unclear whether that is the case here. The promotion issued the following statement:

“Rey Fénix will be unable to participate in our Lucha Libre event on September 27th due to personal circumstances. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, as it is beyond our control. However, we remain committed to delivering the finest Lucha Libre experience in El Paso. We assure you of this promise. Please stay tuned for updates regarding the event lineup.”
