As previously noted, the All Elite Wrestling weekly show on TNT will have a sports vibe.
Dave Meltzer reported this week that the show will be categorized as a “sports event” on the cable television listings. WWE categorizes themselves as entertainment.
Tony Khan has said many times that he wants to present a sports-based show and he wants wins and losses to mean something.
Another interesting thing to note is that AEW will be TV-14 and not PG. Meltzer noted that the decision to be TV-14 was something agreed to several months ago and TNT has given AEW specific bylaws that they can’t cross.
Both sides agreed that the show will be more edgy and risque than WWE programming. It is worth noting that Tony Khan has said that the hardcore stuff we’ve seen on their shows will be saved for pay-per-views so don’t expect to see thumbtack matches on TNT.
On the latest investor conference call, Vince McMahon told investors that WWE has graduated from being a “blood and guts” product and he seemed agitated at the notion that AEW would be edgier than his PG product. There are some hints at Raw getting a little bit edgier but it remains to be seen how far they can go since they do have the PG rating and they likely will not be able to get too edgy on FOX.
It’s a fun time to be a wrestling fan.
