AJ Styles breaks WWE Championship record

AJ Styles’ WWE Championship reign has now broken a record.

“The Phenomenal One” won the WWE Title from Jinder Mahal on an episode of SmackDown Live back in November of last year. Styles has retained the title for the past several months, even after a longstanding feud with Shinsuke Nakamura. Over the course of his reign as the top dog on Tuesday nights, Styles has now etched himself in WWE history.

Styles has now held the WWE Title for over 281 days. That makes him the longest reigning WWE Champion in SmackDown history, surpassing JBL in the record books. JBL took to Twitter to react to the news that his record had been broken by Styles. He said he couldn’t be more proud of the former IMPACT Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling star:

“My record has been broken and I Could not be more proud of ⁦@AJStylesOrg⁩ -a world class individual and athlete, looking forward to watching this incredible performer Sunday at @WWE Summerslam.”
