Former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio has announced his plans to fight again in MMA. Del Rio appeared alongside Combate Americas CEO Campbell McClaren on The MMA Hour to talk about his plans for next year.
“I’m going to jump back in the cage — or in the cage for the first time — because I used to fight in rings in Mexico and in Asia, but never inside the cage,” Alberto said. He said that he would be fighting for Combate Americas.
McClaren said he wanted Del Rio to fight in 2016 but Del Rio wasn’t “hungry” to step back into the sport at that time.
Del Rio has fought for Japan’s Deep promotion and for PRIDE. He hasn’t fought since 2010.
The plan is for his fight to air live on pay-per-view sometime in 2019. Del Rio says he wants to fight someone who is well known in Mexico and the United States.
There are no details on the date or the venue yet but Del Rio says Arena Mexico would be a good venue if they decide to do it in Mexico. Del Rio has said in previous interviews that he plans on finishing his pro wrestling career in 2019.
Jack Swagger (under his real name Jake Hager) is also expected to step into the MMA cage next year for Bellator.
