WWE could be losing another top NXT mainstay
Fightful is reporting that NXT Triple Crown Champion Johnny Gargano’s WWE contract is due to expire on December 3, 2021.
The report also states that Gargano and WWE have not entered negotiations to extend his deal but the expectation is that WWE will start negotiations in the Fall.
The report also cites sources saying that Gargano’s situation is not similar to Adam Cole and Pete Dunne. Cole and Dunne’s contract expiration was a surprise to the company but in this case with Gargano, WWE has known about it for a while. It was said that they have reviewed many of the deals after Malakai Black’s situation that allowed him to sign with AEW just 30 days after his release. Black was believed to have been under a 90-day non-compete but that was never added to his contract when he moved to the main roster and so he was legally able to sign with any wrestling company just 30 days after he was let go.
The report also noted that Gargano’s deal is up around the time when WWE originally thought that Cole’s deal was up and they planned on speaking with both Gargano and Cole ahead of that date. As everyone knows by now, Cole’s deal expired in July and there was a handshake deal in place for him to stick around until SummerSlam weekend and he is now in AEW.
Gargano was first brought in to NXT in 2015 and then officially signed in 2016. Losing him would be a big blow to the brand. There is no word yet on the contract status of Gargano’s wife Candice LeRae.
