All signs point to Kofi Kingston winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 but this was not the plan just a few weeks ago.
Mustafa Ali was supposed to challenge Daniel Bryan for the title at Fastlane and he would have lost but Bryan would have made him look stronger. Unfortunately, Ali suffered a concussion before the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view so that has stalled his momentum. It was Bryan’s idea to bring him up to the main roster from 205 Live.
Bryan would have moved on from his match with Ali and faced Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 35. The idea was that the Owens’ vignettes would have gotten across that he’s just a regular guy that just enjoys spending time with his family. Bryan would have cut promos on him ripping him for his unhealthy eating lifestyle.
Vince McMahon changed course and decided to move Kingston into the match with Bryan because of the fan reaction, most notably the reaction at Elimination Chamber. I was told that the decision has not been made yet on if Kingston will win the WWE Championship but McMahon was leaning in that direction and they would have rematches after Mania with Kingston defending against Bryan and other contenders for a few months.
Another source told me that if Kingston wins the title, he would likely drop it by SummerSlam because they have ideas in mind for who they want as champion by the time SmackDown Live moves to Friday’s on Fox in the Fall.
There is no word on what Owens will be doing at WrestleMania but the overcrowed card would seem to indicate that he would likely be added to the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal with the rest of the wrestlers not currently booked in a storyline.
