As previously noted, Samoa Joe has been getting positive reviews for his commentary work on WWE Monday Night Raw. One person I spoke with in WWE said Joe has a future in the broadcast booth (if he wants it) after he retires from the ring.
Dave Meltzer reported this week that the reason why Joe did not announce on the 11/25 episode of Raw because he was already booked for the 11/26 episode of WWE Backstage in Los Angeles and Raw was in Chicago.
Joe’s role at the broadcast table is temporary, even though Dio Maddin will not be returning. As noted earlier this week, Bryan Alvarez noted that Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunne were not a fan of his commentary work. Maddin is training to wrestle at the Performance Center and they are using that as the official story as to why he is no longer doing commentary.
Meltzer noted that the reason why Joe’s role is temporary is that he is considered too valuable as a talent and he will only be doing commentary until he gets cleared. He is rehabbing a hand injury but he is expected back in the ring soon.
The latest on Joe is that he will be evaluated later this month so he could be back in the ring as soon as late December or early January, just in time for the hype for the Royal Rumble. Joe has not seen in-ring action since September.
