Despite reports to the contrary, The Rock’s appearance on Monday Night Raw was not a last minute deal. This was planned for a while and it was something that very, very few people knew about. I believe Kevin Dunn, Vince McMahon, Triple H, Brian Gerwitz (he helps write Rock’s promos) and Stephanie McMahon were the only people that knew. The creative team was not told ahead of time either. Rusev and Lana were clued in before the show started.
Rock had already had a scheduled meeting with Time Warner on Monday in New York so he and WWE came together and worked out a surprise appearance since Raw was in Brooklyn. As noted yesterday, he was purposely not included in the script to prevent word from leaking out. The segment, as it was laid out, was for Big Show to come out and talk when Rusev called him out. There was some speculation that he could appear on Raw since Rock tweeted earlier in the day that he was in New York City but obviously it was a surprise to most watching the show and made his Raw return come off even more special.
