A lot of fans were left with questions after Charlotte Flair defeated Asuka to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Was this the original plan or was this another case of Vince McMahon changing things around at the last minute?
As noted on Wrestling Observer Radio, the idea to have Flair win the title was brought up a while back but it was just an idea at the time and there were no signs that Vince McMahon would actually decide to move in that direction.
On Tuesday afternoon, McMahon made the decision to put the title on Flair. That would explain why WWE’s social media accounts and website were teasing the number 1 contenders match between Naomi, Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville and Carmella as late as Monday night.
I was told that one of the reasons McMahon decided on putting the title on Flair is because he was aware that she was looked at by fans as the third wheel for the Raw Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania and this would get more people talking about her on the same level as Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey.
As of now, there is no advertised WrestleMania match for Asuka. I would assume that she will be on the show in some form, perhaps as part of the Women’s Battle Royal.
