Backstage news on what was originally planned for AJ Styles on Smackdown Live

The big title change on this week's episode of WWE Smackdown Live was not what was originally planned for the show. Last week, they were advertising Rusev vs. AJ Styles and the winner would get a spot on Team Smackdown at Survivor Series. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Styles was supposed to win that match.

All of the promotional materials were redone this week, including the graphic on the main page of the WWE Network website. The graphics now feature Brock Lesnar vs. Styles as the main event and the Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown match as the semi-main.

It's unclear what the plan is for the WWE Championship but the advertising in India had Kevin Owens challenging Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship next month. I suppose they could change it to Styles vs. Mahal. If that happens then there's a good chance that Mahal would win the title during that tour.
