Backstage News on When WWE Decided to Unify the WWE Women’s Main Roster and NXT Tag Team Titles

In a segment on Friday’s WWE SmackDown, it was confirmed that the company would unify the Women’s Tag Team Titles and NXT Women’s Tag Titles in two weeks on SmackDown when NXT champions Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre take on main roster champions Shayna Baszler and Ronda Rousey.

As previously reported, the idea to unify the titles is from WWE CEO Nick Khan, as it is part of his vision. WWE also has plans to overhaul the tag team division.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that there were several in NXT at the time of the formation of the NXT Tag Team Titles confused by the move to create the belts in the first place.

They were told, “there were plans in order to combine the NXT and WWE Women’s tag titles going back to April when the WWE Draft occurred.”

The plan is for the unified champions to appear on NXT TV when needed as “was the original plan for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles” and “this unification would have moved forward quicker, if not for the unfortunate injuries within the division.”
