Backstage news on whether Vince McMahon had plans to make Cody Rhodes a World Champion in WWE

Cody Rhodes is on the shelf due to a torn pec, with his last match taking place against Seth Rollins at WWE Hell in a Cell.

WWE brought back Rhodes with the intent to use him as a top star and did just that with his return happening at WrestleMania 38 and going over three straight times on a top star in Rollins.

Many fans believed that Vince McMahon had plans to make Rhodes the WWE or Universal Champion at some point, two titles that Roman Reigns holds right now as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.

Fightful Select reported today that they spoke with “numerous sources in WWE who said that at the time that Cody Rhodes sustained his injury, Vince McMahon had not solidified plans to make Cody Rhodes the WWE or Universal Champion.”

The report noted that McMahon was “all on board” for the Reigns double title reign, and there were no ideas “floated from Vince that would have indicated he was ready to move on from that this summer.”

McMahon resigned from his WWE duties in July due to the hush money scandal.

The injury typically takes several months to recover from, and WWE stated that he could be out for nine months. Rhodes stated last month that doctors won’t give him a timeframe for when he could return.
