As previously noted, there were plans for Roman Reigns to have an “edge” added to his character after WrestleMania but those plans were put on hold when he made the decision to go home because of COVID-19 concerns.
Dave Meltzer noted in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Reigns asked to be turned heel. For what it’s worth, Reigns said years ago that he was interested in being booked as a heel. It is not known who made the decision to have him paired with Heyman.
What is known is that Heyman and Reigns are good friends and Heyman has been close with the Anoa’i family dating back to the early 80s and possibly before that. Heyman used to shoot photos at the Madison Square Garden shows and that would be his entry into the pro wrestling business.
Reigns, obviously, is considered the top heel on the SmackDown brand. We were told that he would have a long title Reigns so don’t expect him to drop it until WrestleMania at the earliest.
