Backstage news on why Paul Heyman is off WWE TV

Paul Heyman has worked on camera as an advocate for several top WWE stars, including Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, and now Roman Reigns.

After years of working with Lesnar, he aligned himself with “The Tribal Chief” as Lesnar wasn’t under contract with WWE through most of 2020 and 2021. He redefined his role and helped elevate Reigns, who turned heel and underwent a gimmick change.

Once Lesnar returned to WWE TV last year at SummerSlam, Heyman was caught in the middle of Lesnar and Reigns for their storyline that lasted a year on and off.

At SummerSlam last month, Reigns defended the Undisputed WWE Universal Title against Lesnar in a last man standing match. It was a wild match, including Lesnar lifting the ring with heavy machinery to send Reigns falling out of the ring. Lesnar also hit Heyman with an F-5. Since that time, Heyman hasn’t been on television.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Heyman hasn’t been seen since that show because the idea is for him to sell the injuries he suffered when taking the F-5 to make the spot mean something. Meltzer added that when Heyman does return, it will be a surprise.

Reigns will defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Title against Drew McIntyre next Saturday at the Clash at the Castle event.
