One of the big stories coming out of Saturday’s WWE SummerSlam was the new faction of IYO Sky (Io Shirai), Bayley, and Dakota Kai as all three stars made their return following the opening bout that saw Bianca Belair successfully retain the Raw Women’s Title over Becky Lynch.

Fightful Select reports this faction was pitched quite a while before Dakota’s April release. Vince McMahon, who was still in charge of creative, turned down the idea.

Other pitched versions of the faction included Raquel Rodriguez and Kay Lee Ray. Once McMahon nixed the idea, Raquel was called up to the main roster and put on SmackDown, Kay Lee was renamed Alba Fyre, and stayed in NXT.

After Io was injured in April at NXT Stand and Deliver, she was on the sidelines for several months. Before SummerSlam, it was reported that she had been medically cleared, but it was believed she was leaving WWE as her contract was slated to expire next month. It had been speculated that she would stay with the company if given a main roster deal, and that’s what happened.
