Pete Dunne is now part of the main roster on WWE SmackDown and has also a new name, Butch. The former WWE NXT UK champion was moved to the blue brand starting this week as he was introduced in a backstage segment by Sheamus. He’s now in the group with the former WWE Champion and Ridge Holland.
Butch later joined Sheamus and Holland at ringside for their tag team match against Big E and Kofi Kingston where Big E suffered a broken neck. Butch played a role in the finish then beat down Kofi after the match.
Fightful Select reported that they had heard throughout the day that "something very dumb" was happening on the show and several people chimed in by saying it would be a name change for a star that many already knew.
Wrestlers outside of the company knew about the name change as far back as Thursday and speculated that it could be a "Bushwhackers rib" because Luke is Ridge Holland's real name. Another former WWE star thought it was based on "Butch" from The Little Rascals.
Dunne re-signed with WWE last summer after being moved from NXT UK to NXT. With Big E suffering an injury, it will impact WWE’s plans for WrestleMania 38 as they were planning a six-man tag team match between New Day and Sheamus, Holland & Butch.
AEW’s John Silver and Matt Cardona publicly reacted to the name change on Twitter:
