Tommaso Ciampa was in Birmingham, Alabama this week because of his torn ACL. The injury occurred during the ladder match at NXT Takeover: Chicago. After the show, Triple H confirmed that he had suffered a significant injury. I am still not sure what the deal is with his ankle injury but it’s either not too serious or it was a worked injury.
On this week’s episode of NXT, Ciampa went out to the ring on crutches to talk about his turn on former tag team partner Johnny Gargano. Tom Phillips confirmed that he would need major knee surgery. The show was taped last week before he flew to Birmingham.
It’s a shame because he was set for a big feud with Gargano that would likely have led to a big match at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn. It’s not known how long he will be out of action but typically, recovery from ACL surgery is 6-8 months. That means that if they still want to do the Gargano vs. Ciampa match then they would have to wait until November or December, at the earliest. They could do it at the Takeover in January on the night before the Royal Rumble but that’s a long time to wait to pick up the feud. The other question here is what do they do with Johnny Gargano? If the plans were to send them to the main roster after Takeover: Brooklyn then this could kill the feud in NXT if Gargano is sent up to Raw or Smackdown.
Ciampa’s promo on NXT was really good. If you missed it, here’s a clip:
