WWE is doing everything possible to take advantage of Ronda Rousey’s star power. She is their biggest mainstream star signing her is paying off so far because they are getting more mainstream press for WrestleMania than any previous year.
It’s no secret that WWE wanted The Rock to team with her on Sunday but a deal could not be worked out because of movie insurance issues. Basically, movie studios are cautious about allowing The Rock to wrestle and there is also the concern about production being moved if he is injured.
So WWE went with Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle as her partner but it turns out that there was another major name being considered. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that, according to Batista, he was asked to be Rousey’s partner. It’s not clear why he turned down the offer but it’s not the first invitation he turned down for this weekend. Several months ago, he noted that he turned down the offer to be inducted into this year’s Hall Of Fame because he felt that his in-ring career is not over. Batista feels that he has more to offer and would like to wrestle a one-on-one match against Triple H at a WrestleMania. He has also expressed interest in wrestling at house shows.
It’s clear that Batista is doing well financially because most wrestlers would have jumped at the opportunity to be involved in a match featuring Rousey, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see The Animal back in action. I guess there’s always next year.
