Becky Lynch: ‘To Go From The Main Event Of WrestleMania To Somebody Who Hadn’t Done Anything Was Terrible’

Becky Lynch recently looked back on a post-WrestleMania program that she described as “terrible”. The program in question immediately followed one of the biggest wins of her career: main-eventing WrestleMania 35 in 2019. That night, Lynch defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in a Triple Threat match for the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships, becoming the first woman to pin Rousey in WWE and walking away as “Becky Two Belts”.

A Major Downshift in Status

Following that historic victory, Lynch entered into a storyline program with then-newcomer Lacey Evans. Many fans immediately perceived the program as a significant downshift in momentum and status for Lynch, who had just spent nearly a year in the hottest feud in the company with Rousey and Flair. Lynch herself confirmed this sentiment while speaking on the Something’s Burning show with Bert Kreischer.

“I start working with Lacey Evans right out the gate… God bless her, but she wasn’t….for me to go from the main event of WrestleMania to somebody who hadn’t done anything was terrible…”

The program with Evans marked a noticeable cooling-off period for the star. Lynch was riding a wave of unprecedented popularity following her heel-to-babyface turn and her subsequent WrestleMania main event victory. To transition from that peak to a feud with a relatively unproven talent like Evans felt anticlimactic. While Evans was working hard and her character, a Marine sergeant, had potential, the jump to a main event spot opposite Lynch proved challenging, given her limited experience at the time.

Heading Into WarGames

Becky Lynch is set to compete in another major match, heading into the women’s WarGames match at the WWE Survivor Series Premium Live Event in San Diego, California. This time, she will be on the team consisting of Lash Legend, Nia Jax, Asuka, and Kairi Sane. They are scheduled to take on the opposition team made up of A.J. Lee, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Rhea Ripley, and IYO SKY.
