It happened after Bobby Lashley successfully retained the title over Randy Orton in the main event. Once Big E cashed in, he beat Lashley for the strap.
Andrew Zarian from the Mat Men Podcast reported that Big E’s title win was supposed to happen during the original draft date for Raw, which was scheduled for the end of August. However, WWE moved the date back to October.
While doing an interview with Graham Matthews of Bleacher Report, Big E was asked when he found out he was going to win the title as he sent out a tweet teasing it that morning.
It turns out that he found out he was going to win the title that day as WWE was still deciding whether he would actually cash-in or just tease it, which has been done in the past.
“When I started this loop, my intention was that I was supposed to be home Monday morning after the live event Sunday and I realized I was going to Raw last minute. That was a bit of a last-minute decision. There was also the option of maybe I go out there and do some teasing and come back later when it’s time to actually cash in or go back to SmackDown and cash in there. I wasn’t really sure. It was an afternoon, that day decision and it all happened very, very quickly. For me, it was definitely not something that was set in stone days and days ahead.”
Big E vs. Lashley in a rematch at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view event seems likely considering WWE did a storyline knee injury for Lashley before he lost the title.
