Big E talks Mailman gimmick that he wanted to bring to FCW

WWE Superstar Big E of The New Day recently appeared on WWE Network show The Bump. One of the topics discussed by The New Day member was his time in the FCW developmental territory. Before he became Big E Langston, the SmackDown Tag Team Champion revealed that he wanted to bring a ‘Mailman’ gimmick to WWE. After coming up with the concept, Big E revealed that the idea was nixed in Florida, mainly because WWE thought it was “not a good idea.”

“I fooled around with some different ideas. Mel Mann in case you didn’t know was a wrestling mailman” Big E began. “I don’t remember all the intricacies. But it was at a time before I got signed and so my buddies thought…you know, we’d kind of bat around ideas and we thought it would be a good idea.”

Big E then revealed what the management at FCW felt about the unique gimmick. “I got to FCW and they said ‘no, this is not a good idea’ (laughs). But my name was gonna be Mel, last name, Mann. And I was going to come out with those short like old school Postal Service shorts that were tight. You know what I mean? I had my mail bag.”

The SmackDown Tag Team Champ would also reveal that he had come up with names of moves for Mel Mann; “I don’t really know. I think I had some other ideas for names of moves and whatnot? But I forget all that because my memory is bad and that was 11 years ago. And that’s what I did to entertain myself.”

The idea seems to have been taken straight out of WWF in the early nineties. That was when the company felt the need to give ‘real life jobs’ to their performers. That was how we would end up with characters like Duke ‘The Dumpster’ Droese, The Goon and Isaac Yankem.

Do you think that Big E as a Mailman in WWE would have worked? Let us know in the comments
