Big E has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding comments made about Chelsea Green’s position in WWE. During the second season of the Netflix series WWE: Unreal, backstage producer Michael Hayes was filmed stating that Green is not built to be a top star on the level of Charlotte Flair or Tiffany Stratton, but rather to help elevate those names.
Speaking to K&C Masterpiece, the former WWE Champion was asked about Green being pigeonholed into a specific spot on the card. Big E admitted that it is painful for any talent to be told their potential is limited by management’s perception.
“Yeah, man, it’s hard to hear when people think you’re just a mid-carder or you’re just an opening act, and that’s about all you will be,” Big E said. “Because I think one of the beautiful things in wrestling is the ability to move up the ladder, to get over with the audience, and to really climb.”
A Political Industry
Big E offered a candid look at the reality of the wrestling business, describing it as highly political. He noted that a talent’s trajectory is often decided by a small group of executives, regardless of how hard the wrestler works.
“So many times in our industry, it’s a very political industry, and a lot of people in a room that make a lot of decisions about the rest of your career,” he explained. “We didn’t want to only be what people thought we were going to be. We thought our faction would be a great opportunity for us to elevate our careers, and it did in immeasurable ways.”
Breaking The Ceiling
The New Day member used his own faction’s success as a prime example of defying expectations. Originally debuting with a gimmick that many fans rejected, The New Day fought to evolve and eventually became one of the most decorated teams in history, propelling Big E and Kofi Kingston to World Championship reigns. He closed his comments with a message of support for Green and others fighting to break through their perceived ceilings.
“So shout out to the talent who are always grinding, who are always trying to be more than what people think they can be,” Big E said. “Because that is what this, that’s what entertainment is as a whole, and you have to be okay with that. But for us, we were always fighting for more.”
