Former WWE star Bishop Dyer, known to fans as Baron Corbin, has opened up about the contract negotiation process in WWE, criticizing the company for what he describes as tactics used to devalue talent to get a better company-friendly deal.
Bishop Dyer On WWE Contract Negotiations
Speaking with Jonathan Coachman on Sirius XM’s Off The Ropes show, Dyer claimed that for a brief period, WWE would bring “measurables” like social media and merchandise numbers to the negotiating table. However, that practice quickly stopped.
“They have no answer to why you are paid what you are paid,” Dyer said. “I know somebody on the roster who said, ‘Well, these don’t look right to me.’ They had someone do some serious digging and they countered everything that was being presented to them with facts and then they got a way better contract. That was the last time that they brought those things to the table.”
Being Taken Off TV
Dyer also described a common tactic where a wrestler’s television time will suddenly decrease as their contract nears its expiration date. “When you get closer to your contract ending, ‘Hey, I’m six months from my contract being up and I’m now I’m not on TV.’ It’s not a coincidence. It’s written that way,” he explained.
“So now, when they present you the contract, they go, ‘Well, you haven’t been on TV in two months.’ Yeah, but I was two and half years prior to this. So, they lowball you. Like, it’s a business. I get it, it is what it is. It’s the nature of the beast.”
Since his departure from WWE, Bishop Dyer has been competing on the independent circuit, primarily for promotions like MLW and Maple Leaf Pro. The full interview can be heard on Sirius XM’s Off The Ropes.
