NXT Champion Bobby Roode recently spoke with the Miami Herald to talk about his career. During the interview, he was asked about being NXT Champion. Roode won the championship after defeating Shinsuke Nakamura at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio back in January. He noted that it’s a pressured situation but it’s a situation that you dream about when enter pro wrestling. He noted that you do what you have to do to be the champion and once you are the champion then you are the focal point of the company.
“You have an opportunity to perform in main events and have an opportunity to perform with top level talent. That’s the main thing that I truly enjoy, being able to go out there and get in the ring with top performers and be the top storylines and feel like you’re the face of the company, the face of the brand. There’s a lot of pressure that’s involved with that, but I enjoy it.”
At last weekend’s NXT Takeover: Chicago event, Roode defended the championship against Hideo Itami. When asked about it, Roode noted that he looks forward to Takeover events as those are the bigger shows for NXT. He noted that it was a great match and he looked forward to facing Itami.
“I thought we told a great story. I was happy with the ending. Being able to wrestle in Chicago, I never really had a chance to perform in the Chicago area too much in my career. I’ve always heard how passionate the Chicago fans are. So to be there and perform at the Allstate Arena, I got to experience that firsthand, and it was a lot of fun, a very special night.”
Roode also discussed what makes NXT special, moving to the next level and more. You can read the full interview here.
