Bobby Roode retains the NXT Championship at NXT Takeover: Chicago

Bobby Roode retained the NXT Championship against Hideo Itami at NXT Takeover: Chicago. The story of the match was whether Itami could hit the GTS and if Roode could hit the Glorious DDT because Roode hurt his arm in the match. I think that the crowd had a hard time buying Itami as a legit contender but it was probably his best match since signing with the company.

Itami did try for the GTS but his left ankle gave out and that allowed Roode to hit the Glorious DDT. Itami kicked out and the match continued. Later, Itami finally hit the move but Roode was too close to the ropes and rolled out of the ring. A portion of the fans chanted for CM Punk while the rest of the arena drowned them out with boos.

Ultimately, Roode got the win after countering another GTS attempt and hitting two Glorious DDT’s.

It looks like Roode will go on to defend against Drew McIntyre at Takeover: Brooklyn III in August.
