WWE Hall of Famer Booker T has made a classy and respectful gesture, announcing that he is postponing an event for his own promotion, Reality of Wrestling (ROW), so that it does not conflict with the final match of John Cena’s career. The ROW “Sub Zero” event was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 13, the same night that John Cena will have his retirement match at a special Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.
In a statement on social media, the five-time WCW Champion explained that some moments are bigger than any one show and that he wants the entire wrestling world to be able to watch and honor one of the greatest of all time.
“In honor of @JohnCena ’s final match taking place December 13th on Saturday Night’s Main Event, we at @TheOfficialROW have made the decision to move our annual winter event, #SubZero, to December 20th,” Booker T wrote. “Some moments in this business are bigger than any one show — and this is one of them. We want the entire wrestling world to come together to watch, reflect, and honor the greatest of all time as he takes his final bow.”
The demand for tickets to Cena’s final match has been astronomical, with reports of over 45,000 people in the Ticketmaster queue for an arena that holds approximately 15,000. By moving his own show, Booker T is not only showing respect to a fellow legend but is also ensuring that fans in his home state of Texas do not have to choose between supporting their local independent promotion and witnessing a historic moment in WWE history.
While Cena’s final opponent has not yet been officially announced, it has been widely reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the current plan is for GUNTHER to be the one to face Cena in his farewell match. According to the report, WWE plans to hold a tournament to determine the opponent, with GUNTHER being the expected winner.
