Roman Reigns’ leukemia diagnosis forced WWE to make changes to the Universal Championship match at Crown Jewel. Once McMahon learned of Reigns’ illness, he decided to make an offer to Brock Lesnar. The original plan was for Reigns to retain his title at Crown Jewel and it was supposed to be Lesnar’s last night in the company for a while. Dave Meltzer talked about this on Sunday’s Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer said, “The deal was, when Roman went down, Vince backed up the Brinks truck and felt with Roman gone they needed Brock. Brock’s last date was gonna be Crown Jewel. Roman Reigns was gonna win that match.”
For whatever it’s worth, Lesnar has yet to sign his fight contract with UFC even though the hype has begun for his fight with Daniel Cormier. It’s an interesting situation for Lesnar because his leverage continues to increase with both WWE and UFC. Cormier plans on retiring in March when he turns 40 and he wants the Lesnar fight in February or March. If WWE wants to keep Lesnar around until WrestleMania then those dates could get in the way of his UFC training.
Lesnar’s new WWE deal is not exclusive and allows him to fight for UFC. If Vince McMahon doesn’t want to risk having his Universal Champion lose in the Octagon then perhaps he can book Lesnar to lose the title at the Royal Rumble. This is just speculation because nobody knows for sure what the plans are for Lesnar going forward other than he will be facing AJ Styles in a champion vs. champion (non-title) match at Survivor Series. Lesnar’s current deal is for two dates.
Cormier is going in for a WWE announcer tryout soon so he could end up working for Vince McMahon so a Lesnar loss to Cormier in UFC is not the worst thing because they could always do Cormier vs. Lesnar in WWE. Cormier’s goal in 2004 was to wrestle in WWE but plans changed and he ended up embarking on a career in MMA after the Olympics.
It will be interesting to see where they go with Braun Strowman. Click here to read about why Strowman was booked to be destroyed by Lesnar at Crown Jewel.
