If you’ve ever shown up at a WWE event with a sign or two you’re not alone. As you can see every week on television fans bring signs from all over to support their favorite superstar or just have a laugh about what they can get on television before security takes their sign away.
There are plenty of reasons not to bring signs to an event. They get in peoples’ way, they are a distraction, and sometimes they’re just annoying to carry around. But this tradition of fan signs is nothing old.
Bruce Prichard recently opened up on an episode of Something To Wrestle With about when fan signs actually became an issue. As it turns out there were plenty of reasons why WWE didn’t like fan signs after a while. But Bruce has been in the business so long he can remember when promoters used to hand signs out to the crowd when they came into the building.
“Austin 3:16” Prichard said succinctly after being asked when fan signs became an issue. “There was a time when Vince, Kevin Dunn, and a lot of people didn’t like [the signs] because it was distracting during the show when people would hold up their signs and either block peoples’ views or all you’re looking at is signs instead of looking at the match. And it just became distracting or it would block cameras. That’s the only reason why they hated them because of that.”
“I remember a time in the business when we used to make signs and I’m talking about, I go waaaay back when I was like twelve-years-old and Paul Boesch had a bunch of signs made up with “Make Dillon Wrestle” for JJ Dillon when he was managing the Mongolian Stomper and a couple of us kids would walk around the ring with the signs. The business has come a long way since then.”
So if you’ve ever been to a live show or have been watching on television when you thought there were way too many signs in the crowd, then you might not be alone in your beliefs.
