John Cena is currently tied with WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair when it comes to the current record of the most reigns as World Champion at 16. He was able to achieve this accomplishment when beating AJ Styles for the WWE Title at the 2017 Royal Rumble pay-per-view event but that reign didn’t last long as he lost it at the Elimination Chamber event to Bray Wyatt.
Although Cena is no longer a full-time star, he is still sticking around the company and working shows when his acting schedule allows.
During Monday ’s episode of Busted Open Radio on Sirius XM, Bully Ray talked about how he thinks Cena should win his 17th world championship at WrestleMania 35 because, in his mind, it would create a great moment for Cena and the company.
“There is going to be a large portion of wrestling fans who might not want to see John win since they don’t want to see Ric Flair’s record broken,” explained Bully Ray. “Listen, it’s tied right now, so the best way to get out of that is to have Flair endorse it. You have that final sit down between John Cena and Ric Flair where John is torn whether or not he really wants to do this. Does he really want to break the record out of respect for Ric?
Then Ric is the one who talks to him and smacks him in the face and tells him, “You go out there and break that record.” When he wins, Ric Flair hands him the championship. That’s a mega moment. That’s a WrestleMania moment!”
